Impressive Debut: Kehlani’s SweetSexySavage Brandon Carter February 3, 2017 For those music lovers that are always crying about missing the sound of ‘90s R&B and singers like Brandy, Aaliyah, Monica & TLC, Ms. Kehlani has found a way to combine classic sounds with a up-to-date twist. The title of her official debut album is truth telling of what you can expect on the project. SweetSexySavage is kind of a 2017 version of CrazySexyCool (TLC’s 1994 sophomore album). WHO IS KEHLANI? She is a 21-year-old who came to prominence as a contestant on NBC’s hit show America’s Got Talent. Her pure clear voice has so many layers and you can hear all the pain and triumph that got her through a tough Oakland childhood. I haven’t been this impressed by a debut album since Teyana Taylor’s 2014 VII. Kehlani opens up the album with a beautiful spoken word piece about womanhood which instantly brings you and from then on you can’t stop listening. I found myself not wanting to skip any song AT ALL. This debut album shows that the songstress is going through a complete transformation and she is comfortably settling into her own. She perfectly displays her vulnerabilities, her strengths, exposing us to her flaws all while delivering a strong sense of self-awareness. She doesn’t mince words about her personal demons and summing up her shortcomings. This is something we haven’t heard from a R&B artist in a long time.
