The late Aaliyah Dana Haughton was a Brooklyn-born singer who was signed to Jive Records. It was clear by the age of 12 that Aaliyah was determined to become a star with high-profile performances on Star Search and by 1994, 15-year old Aaliyah released her debut album, Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number.

Haughton’s debut album was produced by successful singer/ songwriter pied piper R.Kelly and went on to sell millions of copies, reaching platinum status. Soon after, rumours were circulated that Aaliyah had illegally married 27-year old Kelly, but Aaliyah denied the union and refused to speak on the matter. Reports say the marriage was later annulled.

Aaliyah later went on to release her sophomore album, One in a Million in 1996, where she worked with the power team producer Timbaland and rap performer Missy “Misdemeanour” Elliott. Working with them is where Aaliyah found her niche and built a very good relationship.

Fast Forward: In 2000, Aaliyah made her first acting debut in hit action movie Romeo Must Die, which she starred alongside star Jet Li in the Romeo and Juliet urban inspired story. In addition, Haughton also was an executive producer on the movie’s soundtrack and included four of her own tracks.

Hit single ‘Try Again,’ which was also on the movie’s soundtrack became an international hit and was placed her third self-entitled album Aaliyah, released in July 2001.

Hard at work,  2001 became Aaliyah’s acting breakthrough as she was also casted to play the title role in Horror movie Queen of Damned and was released to movie theatres in 2002. Also, the Brooklyn beauty was casted for two upcoming sequels of blockbuster sci-fi thrill The Matrix.

It seemed Aaliyah had just begun her pathway to international success but in 2001, while on her way back home from a Bahamas music video shoot for single ‘Rock The Boat,’ sadly her plane crashed and killed Aaliyah and eight members of her film crew. She was just 22-years old at the time of her death & many mourned her death around the globe.

Many would argue that Aaliyah changed the R&B music in the small time she had to share her talents and in memory of Aaliyah her mother Diane Haughton and brother Rashad have partnered with perfume company Xyrena to launch scent ‘Aaliyah.

Aaliyah’s brother Rashad said in a recent press release: “It has been wonderful working with Xyrena to create an incredible fragrance that embodies the beauty, mystery, and creativity that my sister infused into every aspect of her life
